Ghore, The Chameleon
A downloadable game for Windows
[Playable Web Version Here]
The war took the colors. The bugs kept them.
Ghore is a small, bone-white chameleon with a nasty look, wandering a wasteland that humans burned flat and gray. The world starts in grayscale. You get the color back by going into the lairs of the giant insects that rule it and killing them.
🎨 Bringing back the colors
Color is the main thing you play for, and it changes how the game feels:
- Every boss you kill gives Ghore a color. It stays on his skin.
- The color spreads through the world around that boss's lair. Vines, water, stone, flowers and toxic fumes all change. The gray dump you fought through is green when you walk back.
- Every color comes with a power. You can reach places that were closed to you before, so getting the colors back also opens up the map.
- Slash enemies open and you get painted with their blood. It's the first color you ever see.
The game
- A huge hand-drawn map, joined into one world: a trash dump, a ruined park, sewers, a subway, catacombs, a mall, a water treatment plant, a sinkhole, a broken dam, a military bunker and caves.
- 11 giant bosses, each with its own lair and its own smaller creatures. They sleep until you step into their arena. They announce themselves, aim their attacks at where you stood (so keep moving), and punish you for hitting them too many times in a row.
- Eat what you kill to heal. Boss carcasses also raise your max health.
- Powers: dash, venom spit (thrown like a grenade), air spin, big jump, water walking, wall walking on almost any surface, and a shield.
- Strength is a resource. Dashing, spitting, swimming and wall walking all drain the same bar, so pick when to use it.
- The tone is apocalyptic and gory.
